Manuel 'Manoling' Silos was born in 1906 (place unknown). He passed away in 1988 (place unknown).

Manuel Silos was an award-winning Filipino filmmaker from the 1920s through the 1950s. He began his career by making silent movies together with his brothers. As a “bodabil” (vaudeville) actor and comedian, Silos used the stage and screen name Sano Tulia. He made his finest films at LVN, many of which have been lost. He directed “Victory Joe” in 1946, a satirical romantic comedy that tackles the strong American presence in the Philippines after World War II.

He also made “Kuwentong Bahay-Bahayan” in 1953, whose entire cast consisted of kids acting as adults, “Puppy Love” in 1956, and “Tuloy ang Ligaya” in 1958 about teenage pop culture created by the popularity of radio shows and American rock and roll. In 1959,

He directed Celso A. Carungunan’s “Biyaya ng Lupa,”considered one of the finest Filipino films ever made. It won the Best Supporting Award for Leroy Salvador at the 1960 Asian Film Festival in Tokyo and the FAMAS Best Picture award the same year. It was also the first Filipino Film to compete in the Berlin International Film Festival.

In 1979, Silos received the “Natatanging Gawad Urian” from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. In 1985 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP).

We believe that great film directors like Manuel Silos and Gregorio Fernandez and the legendary actress Rosa Rosal should be considered for the National Artist Award for Cinema. Unfortunately, like everything else in this country, politics and popularity have replaced true artistry in selecting contenders for this award. Incidentally, the award was initiated by the late Ferdinand Marcos, in 1972, shortly before the declaration of Martial Law.
